Today’s post references the book Lasting Leadership by George Manning and Kent Curtis. In the book they outline eight attributes and qualities of contemporary leaders. Out of the eight, which four were the most important for a leader to possess? I pick and explain the lasting leadership top qualities.
Lasting Leadership Top Qualities
1. Truth telling – In my opinion it is critical for a leader to consistently tell the truth. By showing your followers time and time again that you speak the truth, even during hard times, you will build trust with your followers.
2. Managing risk – During my leadership career, I’ve learned the importance of managing risk. I’ve seen many leaders take managing risk lightly or skipping risk management altogether. Then, six months later when an event happens, they are in a tailspin trying to figure out how to fix an issue that they could have planned for before it occurred.
3. Managing and building their organization’s brand – Focusing on building a brand where the brand is your own name, it is important to do the right thing, show people that you are confident and worthy to lead them. When you have a name for yourself, more doors open up, more opportunities come your way and you continue to get more leadership opportunities.
4. Finding and catering to under-served markets – I believe it is critical for a company to discover and cater to under-served markets. This provides a profitable opportunity because people are looking for solutions to their problems, and if they are not being solved adequately, there is opportunity to add value to people and also make a profit!
